Norton Radome for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner
Saint-Gobain Composites Aerospace (Ravenna, Ohio), a business unit of Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics, has been working in close cooperation with Spirit AeroSystems (Wichita, Kansas) for many years to supply Norton high-performance radomes for the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. And with success! Since the start of this cooperation and program deliveries beginning in September 2011, Boeing has delivered 431 787s to 41 airlines around the globe and is on track to deliver number 500 in December 2016.
The radome design provides the 787 operator with the best weather radar performance and excellent service life.

This Dreamliner radome is the largest quartz radome structure that Saint-Gobain has ever designed and manufactured for commercial aviation since the first introduction of quartz/epoxy radomes to commercial aviation.
The 787’s nose radome is 7 ft/2.2m in diameter and provides a protective, electromagnetically transparent cover for the weather radar and antennas located on the nose of the aircraft.
The radome incorporates Saint-Gobain’s trademarked Quartzel quartz fibers. The added structural strength, good thermal performance and high radar transparency of quartz, provide significant advantages over other materials.

Repairs on the B787 radome can be performed by Saint-Gobain. They repair this radome to an A-class repair level but also control the repair in their Anechoic chamber for Radio frequency testing and recertification to the operators.
